This week we ask our customers what they think about the Before Watchmen announcement and follow it up with few photos from our team up with a local food chain on Kids Night, giving away Free All Ages comics.
Owner of Collectors Corner, Randy on Before Watchmen : “My favorite series and favorite character, Rorschach being utilized by a company to maximize profits on a property they own, i am fine with that. I really feel it works best when you fill in the blanks of the past and what may come with Watchmen,but if DC Comics wants to make money and place quality creators and industry veterans on these books to at least guarantee they are more than a cash grab it is totally fine with me as comic reader and retailer. The statues are of course a cash grab, but again i will place that Rorschach right alongside others on my shelf at home. I understand a lot of people are posting about integrity and honoring the original works, but Alan Moore of course has written many characters that had previously existed in some form or another like Swamp Thing, Batman, GL, and notably revised the original Charlton line to mold them into Watchmen’s cast of characters as we all know them. He changed the way many of us looked at comic books with Watchmen, for that i thank him and respect the work as it exists. I do feel however that claiming that no one should add to or prequel-lize it is silly, after all it’s fiction and Moore himself (Yes im going there too) revised and twisted many literary characters in both Lost Girls and LOEG to his own means. The one i am looking forward to most is Minutemen, Cooke can do no wrong. Can’t wait.”

This week we ask our customers what they think about the NEW DC Comics Logo compared to the current and previous logos. We had a really hard time finding anyone with a difference of opinion that liked the new logo after asking and discussing now the logo for weeks and then finally recording on Wednesday.
Owner of Collectors Corner, Randy Myers had this to add : “DC Entertainment/Time Warner is well aware of the power of a Logo, and i personally feel that this New Logo was chosen to reflect their interest in merging mediums by having a unified logo that evokes the digital age. This is not an accident or coincidental! The idea behind a logo like this is to work mostly in the Digital realm or non-static (non-printed) realm.
For anyone with even a minor knowledge of basic brand recognition that they would likely notice the intention to use this Logo digitally and across other media platforms along with print on Comic Books and collections as an attempt to blur the lines between them to the consumer. This is ideal for DC Comics as they in my opinion, believe like many other companies that Digital Comics will be a profitable and viable means of delivering comic content and this is one more step toward that goal or supplemental to this agenda.
All that said the New Logo lacks the fluidity and soft lines of the current logo as well as the Iconography associated with the lineage of the circular emblem or oval which is now gone replaced with harsher straight lines more reflective of the corporate mimicry so abundant in the digital age. It is bland and lifeless even when infused with brand identifying colors. Lastly at first sight i honestly thought it looked like it was designed in one of those projects in a high school design class where they ask you to redesign a classic corporate logo. This would get a C- at best. Again this not a conspiracy but i believe to those less aware an attempt to intentionally move the Logo along with the company further down the disconnected roads to the digital age.”
I would go further into Grant Morrison land about this New Logo as a Sigil meant to invoke the Digital Age, but i’ll refrain.

This week we feature footage from our Christmas Eve Sale starting at 9:00 AM on Dec 24th along with customers shopping and enjoying the tremendous savings of our Annual X-Mas Eve Store wide sale.
This year 2011 was a great year for Comic Books all around. Sales were way up and DC Comics did the unthinkable and rebooted their entire line which was a resounding success here at CC. Comics have been trending up even as talk of digital content grows we are seeing no loss of readers to that format that we can calculate. Some big movies helped drive sales like Captain America, Thor and Green Lantern, even if they weren’t all fan faves or box office smashes, awareness is awareness.
We also celebrated our 10 Year Anniversary in 2011, a major milestone for the store.
As always we look towards innovation, expansion, improvement and the ultimate in customer service and experience at the store. Wait til you see some of the things we are working on for 2012.
Free Comic Book Day was huge in 2011 for us with over 5,000 people through the doors and we are looking at making it an even bigger event this year. We were also nominated for an Eisner Spirit of Retailing Award which was a great honor and we are hoping for a repeat or even a win this coming year!

This week, we go to Baltimore Comic-Con, set up our booth and show you the enormous record breaking crowds, amazing costumes, some from the show floor exclusive video! Was it Stan Lee, or are comics coming back in a big, big way, we think a little bit of both! You could feel the excitement in the air on both Saturday & Sunday, there was no slowing down of the stampedes of comic fans, young and old, women, men and a lot of children. I want to stress that this is the most crowded BCC i have ever seen and i have been to every one from the start. Even though DC & Marvel had no Official Presence the Fans were spending money and having a great time. For the first time in the shows history i can recall, people had to be kicked out as the show closed customers refused to leave. We gave CC Work Shirts to guys we admire in the industry and they were ecstatic about getting them including Jason Aaron, Jimmy Palmiotti & Greg LaRocque.

CC Comic Book News : Major NEWS from DC COMICS over the past week with the announcement of the DC universe being re-launched as 52 #1 New Series! While we are sure many of these will be huge hits like Grant Morrison on Action Comics #1, we are not sure how many new readers this will bring into the store. We are positive we’ll see some new faces. We hope for the best with this attempt by DC to boost sales and grow their base and we hope many of you will sample some of these new titles.

NONPLAYER is the story of Dana Stevens, a young woman who retreats from the dismal workaday world of the future into the digital fantasy realm of Jarvath, where she’s a fearless warrior. Dana is not alone in her pursuits, however, and before long her adventures begin to cat-and-mouse back and forth between the two worlds. Collectors Corner’s entire Staff was really impressed by this book. The story is engaging and the Art & Coloring are amazing resembling a hybrid of Moebius & Geoff Darrow that is very unique.
